A Mediterranean cruise packing list is necessarily different from your Caribbean one. A Mediterranean cruise is brimming with sights to see and things to do; you'll be spending more time walking the soles off your shoes than splashing around in a bathing suit. The weather will be pleasantly warm but not hot with plenty of bright, sunny days. If you visit during the spring, you will just miss the crowds of tourists swarming to the region, which is always a plus. Be prepared with plenty of lightweight clothing for layering so you can easily adapt to changing temperatures. It’s not unheard of for guests to walk several miles a day while exploring their ports of call.

Some mosques and churches can issue you a robe and/or head covering, but there is no guarantee of cleanliness of these shared outfits… It’s easier to dress conservatively and carry a scarf. But for first time cruisers in the Mediterranean, packing for a luxury cruise in Europe can be a challenge. What to wear on a Mediterranean cruise is very different from what you’d wear on a Caribbean cruise. Below is a list of the most important items to pack for your Mediterranean cruise. One of the secrets of packing light, I’ve learned, is to limit your wardrobe to just one colour scheme per trip. This works well for long weekends where you want to travel with just a small bag. But for the week’s cruise I allowed myself a couple of different colour schemes for my Mediterranean cruise outfits. My sightseeing wardrobe consisted of pretty t-shirts and cut-off trousers. But I also packed some vest tops like the orange linen Eileen Fisher top I’m wearing in the photo below for time around the pool.
Capsule Wardrobe for a Mediterranean Cruise
In the Spring, the flowers are in bloom and the landscapes are lush and green. The fall brings mild days with beautifully crisp and clear skies. The water is a bit colder but definitely still swimmable, especially for those who love a refreshing dip. This is when the region is typically at it’s busiest, bursting with travellers looking to soak up the sun. The weather is hot, the water is warm, and the coastlines are filled with tourists.
Hotels
Shorts, lightweight shirts, capris and sundresses all work well for most daytime activities on and off the ship throughout the Mediterranean during the warmer summer months. Plan on adding long pants and layers for spring and fall cruises. Hats, caps, visors and sunglasses are a good addition for excursions any time of year, as is a long-sleeve sun protective shirt. If your onshore adventures will take you to a church or mosque, plan to bring clothing that covers the knees and shoulders. For men, smart, versatile clothing like t-shirts, shorts, polos and swimwear are perfect to pack for a Mediterranean cruise.
Lightweight Scarf or Pashmina
Instead I packed a lovely sparkly top from Eileen Fisher as well as my silky Joseph Ribkoff evening cover-up that would make a simple outlook look a lot more glamorous. As we’d be visiting a different destination every day and we like to be pretty active, I packed comfortable but smart city trainers and some pretty flip flops for time on board. Outdoor Activities – If you have any outdoor activities or tours planned during any of your cruise stops, make sure you pack accordingly.

If you plan on doing some long day activities where you will spend lots of time outside we recommend also having a waterproof cover for your backpack. We always recommend packing lip balm that has an SPF for the Med so your lips are protected when on beach excursions etc. Depending on where you are from, who you are sailing with and where you may need to take a travel adaptor with you to ensure that all your electronics will work.
